Terps Cross Country Holds Regional Ranking

Oct. 25, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite resting several of its top runners at the Maryland Invitational on Oct. 19, the Maryland women's cross country team has retained its spot in the top ten out of 36 Mid-Atlantic Division I teams.

The Terps currently rank eighth in this week's poll, dropping only one place from their previous ranking of seventh. This ranking is thanks to strong performances such as their second place finish at the Maryland Invitational and their seventh place finish at the Indiana State Invitational, where they faced several nationally ranked schools.

Helping to lead the charge for the Terps are freshman Katie Purcell (Coraopolis, Pa.) and Cori Koch (Lutherville, Md.), who have finished first and second for the team in each of their four races this season. Also putting in strong finishes are junior Kim Smith (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Allison Carney (Las Vegas, Nev.).

The Terps' next challenge will be the ACC Championships, hosted by Georgia Tech on Nov. 2. With their team well rested and prepared, the Terps are ready to face their ACC opponents, several of which hold national rankings.
