COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
For the first time since 1965, football teams from the Naval Academy and the University of Maryland will play each other. The two teams will kick off the 2005 season with a game played at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore on Saturday, Sept. 3. The time of the game will be determined at a later date.
Said Maryland athletics director Debbie Yow: "This game has been anticipated for years by many of the Terrapin faithful. It has been a pleasure to represent their interests and to finally reach agreement with Navy's Chet Gladchuk. And, we will play the game in a state of the art football venue."
"This game, which will be an event for the state of Maryland, will be a
wonderful way to kick off the 2005 football season," said Gladchuk, Navy's athletics director. "It
will be a festival type atmosphere for both schools with many city wide
activities surrounding the game. We anticipate extraordinary interest and
fully expect it to be a sellout. The Baltimore Ravens organization deserves
a great deal of credit for making this matchup a reality."
Ravens Owner and Chief Executive Officer Art Modell is pleased to have the game played at the Ravens' home field. "This will be a big-time event for the community and the state. We're very happy we could be part of this, and we look forward to bringing other Maryland groups together to participate in this collegiate experience. We're planning a full weekend of activities that can be enjoyed by the students from both schools, the faculty and staffs, along with businesses and football fans in general."
Navy beat Maryland, 19-7, the last time these teams met, which was Nov. 6, 1965 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Maryland had won the previous season - 27-22 at College Park.
