No. 6 Terps (12-3, 4-1 ACC) At No. 13 Virginia (10-5, 2-3 ACC)
at Klockner Stadium (8,000), Charlottesville, Va.
Maryland's Next Game:
Wednesday, Nov. 6 ~ 7 p.m.; No. 6 Terps vs. Bucknell
at Ludwig Field (4,000); College Park, Md.
Sixth-ranked Maryland (12-3, 4-1 ACC) heads to No. 13 Virginia (10-5, 2-3 ACC) aiming to knock-off the Cavaliers at Klockner Stadium for the first time since 1996 when Maryland won the ACC tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Cavs. Virginia is the seventh ranked team the Terps will face this season. Maryland is looking for its best ACC season since it went undefeated in 1968, the year the Terps were co-NCAA champions and ended the conference slate with a perfect 5-0 record.
Cirovski One Win Away From 150 Career Wins
Entering the game this Friday with No. 13 Virginia, Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski is one win away from his 150th career win. The 2002 season marks the 10th year that Cirovski has guided the Terrapin men's soccer program, which he has piloted to a 123-73-9 record during his years in College Park. Cirovski, a 1986 graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is entering his 12th year overall and has a 149-85-15 career record.
Under Cirovski, the Terrapins have over 100 wins, a 1998 appearance in the national semifinals, and eight NCAA appearances. Maryland won the 1996 ACC Championship and has had numerous Terrapins sign professional contracts in the United States and abroad.
One for The Ages: Maryland/UVa
Always a classic match-up wrought with unparalleled emotion and talent, the Maryland/Virginia game should provide nothing less than that same intensity this year. With a win, the Terps are looking for:
If Maryland leaves Charlottesville with a win, it would be the first time Virginia lost a game at Klockner Stadium since November 25, 2001, when Seton Hall beat the Cavs in the NCAA tournament. The last time Virginia lost an ACC match at home was October 21, 2000, 3-2 to Duke.
All-Time Series vs. Virginia
Maryland holds a 29-22 advantage in the all-time series with Virginia, but has lost the last three meetings. Maryland's last win over UVa was in 1999 when Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) hit the game winner to lift Maryland over Virginia at Ludwig Field. During the Sasho Cirovski Era at UM, the Terps have gone 2-9-2, with wins in 1999 and 1996 when the Terps beat Virginia on their field to win the ACC championship.
Current Terps vs. Virginia
Two current Terrapins have scored points against Virginia in their careers. Scott Buete netted the game-winning goal in 1999 to give Maryland a 1-0 win at Ludwig Field. A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) had the assist on Buete's gamewinner.
UM At Klockner in 2002
The Terps have already visited Klockner Stadium this season for the Virginia Soccer Classic. Maryland went 1-1 over Labor Day weekend, earning an 8-0 win over Rhode Island and falling 2-1 to then-No. 20 Kentucky.
Causey Returns Home
First-year Maryland assistant coach Jeff Causey should feel right at home in Charlottesville this weekend after playing at Virginia and later taking a short stint as an assistant coach there.
Causey still holds several of Virginia's goalkeeping records including the single-season record for saves (88 saves in 1990) and the career records for saves (249), shutouts (27), minutes played (7,050) and games played (77).
