OWINGS MILLS, Md. -
The Terrapin men's lacrosse team opened the fall ball season at the fifth annual PriceModern Lacrosse for Leukemia Tournament Saturday at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md.
The Terps started the morning off with reigning National Champions Syracuse, followed by Loyola and Ohio State, finishing the day with a 1-2 record and a wealth of added experience.
Senior midfielder Mike Mollot led the way against Syracuse, posting three goals and three assists in a 9-8 loss to the Orangemen. Freshman attackman Joe Walters was not far behind, earning points on two goals and one assist in his first collegiate match.
With their help, the Terps rallied from a 6-2 halftime deficit to an 8-7 lead against Syracuse in the second half. Also making contributions were senior Matt Urlock with two goals and freshman Billy McGlone with one.
McGlone stepped up in the team's second match against head coach Dave Cottle's former home Loyola, netting a hat trick on four shots and leading the Terps to a 7-4 victory. Senior captain Ryan Moran scored two goals, while Mollot and senior Willy Passavia each added one.
Senior goalie Danny McCormick had six saves in the victory.
In the third and final match of the day, the Terps squared off against Ohio State, who is going into their sixth year of NCAA competition. Cottle chose to give the less experienced players some action in this game, calling the time a learning experience and a chance to let everyone participate. The Terps fell 5-1 to the Buckeyes, the lone goal being scored by freshman Andrew Schwartzman.
Other teams participating in the tournament were: Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Towson, UMBC, Butler, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac, Washington College and the United States men's lacrosse team.
The Terps will return to action October 19 in the Genesee Valley Fall Lacrosse Tournament.
