Davis, W.V. - At last year's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, three men ran to represent Maryland cross country. This year, the Terps were able to compete as a seven-man team, and their combined effort earned them a 13th place finish.
The meet, held at the Canaan Valley Golf Course in Davis, W.V., was filled with many regional powerhouses, including top-ranked Villanova and second-ranked Georgetown. Not surprisingly, Villanova and Georgetown finished first and second in the meet, followed by Princeton to round out the top three. Maryland's 13th place finish is quite a significant accomplishment, since the last time they competed as a team in this event, they took 24th place.
"The men really ran very well today," said Head Coach Trent Sanderson, "Especially in such bad weather."
Junior Mike Prada used his prior experience at the meet to aid him in pacing the Terps for the second time this season. He posted his highest finish ever at the NCAA regional competition, taking 43rd in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 31:57.2. This time was one minute faster than his time at last year's race. Coming in next for the Terps was sophomore Florent Groberg, in 57th place with a 32.24.8. Fellow sophomore Adam Ambrus finished with a 32.29.9 to take 64th place out of the 179-man field.
The Terps' final meet of the season will be on Nov. 23, at the IC4A Championships in New York, N.Y. Last year the team turned in an impressive finish to round out its 2001 campaign, and this year the Terps are looking to continue their success.
