Katie Purcell Finishes In Top 25 At NCAA Regionals

Nov. 16, 2002

Davis, W.V. - One year ago, the Maryland women's cross country team had no one to represent them at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals. This year, not only did they send seven talented runners to Davis, W.V, but they also were able to turn in a solid eighth place finish in the 27-team field.

Georgetown, Villanova and Penn State, ranked first, second and third in the region, lived up to their rankings by rounding out the top three at this weekend's competition. Taking fourth overall was host team West Virginia. Continuing to show improvement, Maryland's eighth place finish was the team's highest team finish in recent years, far surpassing their 17th place finish in 2000.

"The girls were covered in mud from head to toe," mused head Coach Trent Sanderson, "But they all really stepped up today. I'm so pleased with their finish."

The first three Terps to cross the finish line at the Canaan Valley Golf Course were members of Maryland's magnificent freshman class. Pacing the Terps for the sixth time this season was Katie Purcell, who took 21st place in the 6,000 meter race with a 21:47.1, setting a season-best time in this event. Allison Carney took 43rd out of 188 women, posting a time of 22:41.7. The third fastest Terp was Cori Koch, who finished in 48th place with a 22:44.1.

The Terps' final meet of the season will be on Nov. 23, at the ECAC Championships in New York, N.Y. Last year the team turned in an impressive finish to round out its 2001 campaign, and this year the Terps are looking to continue their success.
