COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - The Maryland men's soccer team has been named the No. 2 seed in the 2002 NCAA tournament and with it has received one of 16 first round byes. Therefore, in the second round on Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. on Ludwig Field, the Terps will play the winner of the American vs. George Washington first round game. Maryland is fresh off winning the 2002 ACC championship this past weekend in Cary, N.C., and enters the tournament with a 17-4 record, the most wins in a single season in Maryland history.
The NCAA appearance is the 22nd overall for the Terps and the eighth under head coach Sasho Cirovski. Since the NCAA began seeding teams in 1994, the Terps' No. 2 seed this season is the highest Maryland has ever received. Maryland has only been seeded one other time when they were the No. 7 seed in 1999's NCAA tournament.
"I'm really happy to be in the NCAA tournament again and I think every game is going to be a tough one," said Cirovski. "I'm proud to be the 2002 ACC champions and the No. 2 seed, but all of that goes out the window when the NCAA tournament begins. We're going to work hard to be prepared for every opponent we may face. Our philosophy is to respect everyone, but fear no one, so we're just going to go out there and give it all we've got just like we've done throughout the season."
