COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Redshirt-sophomore Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) grabbed his third honor of the week when he was named to the Soccer America team of the week. Thompson was also named the College Soccer News national player of the week and the Maryland student-athlete of the week for his accomplishments at the ACC tournament, where he was named the tournament MVP.
Thompson scored five goals and one assist in the 2002 tournament en route to Maryland's first ACC title since 1996, including all three in the championship game. The striker broke the tournament record for goals in a tournament (5), tied the tournament record for goals in a game (3 vs. Virginia in the championship game), and tied the record for points in a tournament (11). He was named the tournament's MVP for his performance.
As the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament, Maryland receives a bye in the first round of the tournament as one of the top 16 teams in the field and meets the winner of the American vs. George Washington first round game. The Terps' NCAA second round game will be played on Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. on Ludwig Field.
