COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Terrapin women's basketball team opened the Comcast and Brenda Frese era on the right foot with a 80-72 win over the visiting Loyola Greyhounds. Maryland starts the season 1-0, while Loyola falls to 0-1.
The Terrapins jumped out to a 12-4 lead with a strong opening five minutes, including six points from freshman Angel Ross (Midlothian, Va.). Ross finished the half with 10 points, with Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) adding nine. Paced by Jennifer Mitchell's eight first-half points, Loyola drew the score as close as seven points with just over seven minutes remaining. At the half, it was Maryland 35, Loyola 27.
Loyola brought the score within four points off back-to-back jumpers from Katie Netherton and Shontrese Smith to open the second half. Maryland stretched the lead back to as many as 14 points with 13:12 remaining on the strength of seven straight points from Terp senior guard Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) and buckets by Razor, Crystal Washington (Clinton, Md.) and Chrissy Fisher in the 14-7 run that spanned two minutes and 40 seconds.
Loyola got no closer than six as time ran down, and the Terps eventually grabbed the eight-point victory when the buzzer sounded despite fighting foul trouble in the post. Razor led the Terps with 16 points, while redshirt-junior Vicki Brick (Timonium, Md.) pitched in with 13 points. Ross and Washington both ended the day with 11 points.
Netherton was the Greyhounds only double-figure scorer, netting 14 on the night.
The Terrapins travel to Niagara this Sunday, Nov. 24, to meet the Purple Eagles at 2 p.m. Maryland hosts the Terrapin Classic with Rider, UMES and Rhode Island back at the Comcast Center on Nov. 29 and 30. The Terps begin with Rider on Nov. 29 at
