Rhode Island Advances To Terrapin Classic Final With 89-58 Victory Over UMES

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In the second game of the fourth annual Terrapin Classic, Rhode Island used a late first half scoring run and dominating team defense to knock off UMES 89-58 to advance to the tournament finale.
After falling behind 9-5 in the first five minutes of play, UMES rallied to knot the score at fourteen apiece when Rachel Goodwin banged home a shot from behind the arc. The Fighting Hawks gained their first lead of the game after Kimberley Martin drained a three-pointer to give UMES a 17-14 lead but it would be short-lived as Rhode Island ran off a 21-8 run over the final nine minutes of the half to take a commanding 37-25 lead to the intermission. Shayla Johnson led all scorers at the break with ten points while Amanda Mills grabbed six rebounds to give the Rams the twelve point lead at the half.
Rhode Island continued its dominance in the second half of play after forcing UMES to commit 29 turnovers, 14 of which occurred in the second half of action. The Rams upped their lead to twenty in less than three minutes into the second half when Katie Stailing connected on a jumper to give Rhode Island the 45-25 advantage. The Rhode Island lead would eventually turn to thirty with three minutes remaining when Abby Lipskis buried a jumper to give the Rams a 79-49 lead.
The Rams closed out the scoring in the contest on another field goal by Lipskis to secure the 89-58 victory for Rhode Island. Johnson led the Rams with 22 points while Mills collected 10 rebounds in the win. Martin who netted 20 points in the loss, including a game-high six three-pointers led UMES offensively. Neferteria Franklin registered 11 rebounds for the Fighting Hawks in the loss.
Rhode Island moves on to face Maryland at 11:00 a.m. (ET) in the tournament finale while UMES will take on Rider at 1:30 p.m. (ET) in the consolation game.
