COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In what was a closer game then the 11-point loss might indicate, the Terrapin women's basketball team dropped an 82-71 decision to the Houston Jaguars in the first exhibition game ever held in the Comcast Center. Senior guard Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) led Maryland with 13 points and five assists, while Jaguar guard Tamicha Jackson led all scorers with 27 points. For the Terps, it was their first game under first-year head coach Brenda Frese.
The Terps jumped to a 16-point lead out of the gate on the strength of seven points from senior Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.), who ended the night with 12 points. At the 13:29 mark, the score stood a 22-6 Terps' advantage, but Houston fought back and used a two-minute Maryland scoring drought to close the deficit to six points. The Jaguar run, engineered by the Portland Fire's Tamicha Jackson and the Utah Jazz's LaNeisha Caufield, saw Houston pull even on a 3-point bucket by Caufield at the 8:31 mark, 26-26.
Maryland never led again, but threatened several times, including closing the gap to as few as six points with 1:31 remaining in the game, 75-69.
"I am very encouraged with this game, even though we have to take the loss," said Frese. "Obviously, we have things to work on but we have only had three to four weeks of practice, so I don't expect to have everything fixed."
Freshman Charmaine Carr (Brandywine, Md.) joined Daniels and Razor with double-digit efforts in the scoring column and finished with 10 points and four rebounds. For Houston, the victory was its fourth in five games against Division I opponents on its exhibition tour. Aside from Jackson's 27 points, Caufiled added 23 point to the Jaguar effort.
The Terrapins host Team Concept on Nov. 16 in the Comcast Center in their final exhibition game of the year. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Maryland's regular season begins on Nov. 22 against Loyola in the first game ever, men's or women's, to be held in the Comcast Center. That game also begins at 7 p.m.
