COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four members of the No. 2 seeded Maryland men's soccer team have been chosen to the NSCAA's all-South Atlantic region team. Redshirt-sophomore and leading-scorer Abe Thompson (Fairfax, Va.), MAC Hermann Trophy nominee Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana), and second-team all-ACC honoree Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) were selected to the first team. Second-team all-ACC selection Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) was picked to the third team.
Thompson leads 19-4 Maryland with 14 goals and eight assists on the year. The ACC tournament MVP for taking the Terps to the tournament title, Thompson was a second team all-ACC pick this fall and has also received player of the week honors from Soccer America and College Soccer News. He is one of the Terps' tri-captains this season and is climbing the Terps' single season charts for points and goals in a season.
Not only a nominee for the MAC Hermann Trophy award, Sumed was also the Terps' lone first team all-ACC performer this season. His six game-winning goals lead Maryland in that category, and he has seven goals and six assists this season. Sumed has also been honored with player of the week status from the ACC, Soccer America, and College Soccer News. The redshirt-junior is currently in Maryland's top 10 for career assists.
Another tri-captain for the Terrapins, Buete was named to the ACC's all-tournament team for his contributions to Maryland's championship run. The redshirt-junior is also on Maryland's career lists for assists and has two goals and eight assists this season for the Terps. Buete was singled out for College Soccer News and ACC player of the week honors.
Stammler, who mans the Terps' central defense, is a tri-captain for Maryland this season. Pacing the Terps to one of the lowest goals against averages in the country, he is also known for his pin-point passing skills from the back and was named to the ACC all-tournament team. The junior defender received third-team Verizon academic All-American honors this season for his performance on and off the field.
No. 2 seed Maryland meets No. 7 seed Connecticut on Saturday, Dec. 7, as it continues its NCAA tournament quest for the national championship. The game begins at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for children (18 and under) and students.
