Dec. 31, 2002
*** Maryland won 11 games in a season for the second time in school history (the Terps went 11-1 in 1976).
*** Maryland posted its first win in a bowl game since Dec. 21, 1985 when it beat Syracuse in the Cherry Bowl 35-18.
*** Maryland's victory over Tennessee tonight was the Terps' first vs. an SEC foe since defeating Vanderbilt Sept. 13, 1986.
*** Maryland is 9-1 this season in games in which it scored first. The Terps scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the game.
*** Curome Cox returned an interception for a touchdown for the second time this season (also vs. Duke). His 54-yard return for a score in the second quarter also established a Maryland bowl record for longest INT return for a touchdown, breaking the mark of 46 yards set by Ed Fullerton vs. Tennessee in the 1952 Sugar Bowl.
*** Nick Novak tied a Maryland bowl record with his 48-yard field goal in the second quarter. It matched the mark set in the 1983 Citrus Bowl (also vs. Tennessee) by Jess Atkinson.
*** This was Maryland's first win in a dome since beating Tulane in the Superdome to open the 1995 season.
*** Head coach Ralph Friedgen is now 21-5 in his two seasons as the Terrapins' head coach, including an 11-3 mark this season.
*** Maryland's first-quarter TD was the first touchdown yielded by the Vols in 10 quarters (Tennessee ended the regular season by posting back-to-back shutout victories).
*** It's the second fewest points Maryland has allowed in a bowl game, as they shutout Florida, 13-0 in the 1975 Gator Bowl.
*** This is also the second time the Terps have held a bowl opponent without a touchdown in the game, with the other being that Gator Bowl.
