COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland men's lacrosse team completed a sweep of this weekend's scrimmage action with a 12-7 victory over Washington College on a rainy and overcast Sunday afternoon at the Artificial Turf Facility.
Against the Division III squad, head coach Dave Cottle played many of the Terps younger players including all of the healthy freshmen and newcomers for the 2002 season. Most of Maryland's starters did not dress and cheered on their teammates in the win.
"It was excellent for our younger players to get a chance to play," said the coach. "I'm really glad we gave the players this opportunity to gain more experience."
The Terps jumped out to a 10-4 lead through three quarters behind solid goalkeeping from freshman T.C. Behm (Villanova, Pa.), who made six saves in the first 45 minutes.
Four different Terps scored a pair of goals including J.R. Bordley (Vienna, Va.), Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.), Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.) and Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.). Bordley and Urlock also had assists for three-point days. Freshman Andrew Schwartzman (Ownings Mills, Md.) also had three points on a goal and two assists.
Maryland's other goals came from junior Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.), sophomore Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.) and freshman Peter Ellis (Ross, Calif.)
The Terps finish the preseason schedule next Saturday, Feb. 16 as No. 2 Syracuse comes to College Park for a scrimmage at noon.
Maryland's regular-season opener will come in two weeks when the Terps host Hobart at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.
