COLLEGE PARK, Md. Junior criminal justice major John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) and senior government and politics and criminal justice major Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) have been named the Maryland student-athletes of the week for their performances on the field the week of Feb. 18- Feb. 24.
McCurdy, for the second weekend in a row, continued to put up impressive offensive numbers as the Maryland baseball team improved to 4-2 on the season and won 2-out-of-3 at the 2002 Charleston Challenge. The junior shortstop improved his batting average to .581 on the season by going 10-for-16 over the weekend. For the tournament, McCurdy drove in seven RBI, scored six runs and hit two doubles and two triples. McCurdy and the Terps resume action in their home opener at Shipley Field against Pace on Friday, Mar. 1 at 2:00 p.m.
Bettker pitched a shut out against Costal Carolina as the softball squad won an extra inning thriller to go 2-0 in the USF-Holiday Inn Tournament. Bettker, who was two strikeouts shy of her single game career high, struck out 13 Lady Chants and allowed only two base runners in nine innings of work. In addition to her dominating performance against Coastal Carolina, Bettker entered in relief against Seton Hall to strike out two and preserve the Terps 7-2 victory. Maryland improved its record to 7-5 on the season and will be in action next at the Speedline Invitational Tournament Mar. 7-10 in Tampa, Fla.
