COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - Maryland assistant men's soccer coach Jeff Rohrman has accepted a head coaching job at the University of Wisconsin after seven years with the Terps.
"I am leaving Maryland with mixed emotions and mixed feelings as I have had a wonderful seven years here," said Rohrman. "The people we've had a chance to meet and get to know through the game have become some of our closest friends. Working at Maryland with Sasho (Cirovski), the staff, and the tremendous players we've had has made this the most enjoyable seven years of my life. I'm looking forward to the challenge and opportunity that awaits me at Wisconsin, and am eager to re-establish Wisconsin soccer as a regional and national power."
During Rohrman's seven years with the Terps, Maryland was 94-50-6 (18-19-5 ACC). With Cirovski and Rohrman at the helm, Maryland went all the way to the national semifinals in 1998 after recruiting the nation's No. 1 class according to Soccer America. The Terps picked up the 1996 ACC championship, the team's first since 1971, with defender Leo Cullen (1995-97) earning ACC Player of the Year honors that season and being selected first overall in the MLS Draft. Other highlights during the Cirovski-Rohrman era included Dan Califf (1998-99) representing the Terrapins as an Olympian in Sydney in 2000 as well as being selected second overall to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS, while Taylor Twellman (1998-99) signed a contract abroad in Germany the same year and became the first of several Terrapin players to sign international contracts over the past few years. The tandem guided Maryland to six NCAA appearances in Rohrman's seven years. During his time at Maryland, Rohrman has also been a highly successful club coach at several different levels.
"What a great honor for Jeff to receive the head coaching job at the University of Wisconsin. He is indeed one of the finest coaches in the country. He is also clearly one of the best friends I will ever have," commented Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski. "The players at Wisconsin are very fortunate to have a head coach like Jeff, who has been an integral part of our program for the past seven years. His loyalty, knowledge and work ethic will sorely be missed at Maryland, however, my daily interaction and friendship will be an equally large loss for me and my family. Jeff and his wife Nancy are godparents to our children and the time that we spent outside the office with them was immense. While this is a tremendous personal loss, this is one of my proudest moments to see Jeff get just reward for his seven great years of service to Maryland. Both personally and professionally, I wish him all the best."
