COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland's defense keyed a 9-3 victory over Georgetown in a men's lacrosse scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Artificial Turf Facility. The game was the first of three preseason matches for the Terps and new head coach Dave Cottle.
The Terps outscored Georgetown 9-1 over the final 48 minutes of the game after the Hoyas took an early 2-0 lead. Junior goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) was the backbone for the defense as he made 12 saves for the Terps.
"I was very pleased with our defense," said Cottle. "Danny was excellent in goal. The defense held us in the game early so we were able to come back once our offense started clicking."
With the Terps trailing 2-0, Maryland ripped off four straight goals bridging the first three quarters on a pair of Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) goals and tallies by brother Mike LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) and Nate Watkins (Horseheads, N.Y.).
After a Phil Vincenti goal cut the lead to 4-3 with 10:30 left in the third quarter, Maryland's offense scored five unanswered goals from five different players -- Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.), Watkins, Mike Morsell (Hungtindon Valley, Pa.), Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.) and Mike LaMonica. Dan LaMonica assisted on three of those goals for a five-point day.
The teams played a fifth quarter and Maryland outscored the Hoyas 3-2 in that period with goals coming from Urlock, Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.) and Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.)
Maryland will host its second scrimmage of the weekend when Division III power Washington College comes to College Park on Sunday, Feb. 10 for a noon face-off. The Terps will host preseason No. 2 Syracuse in the final preseason tune-up next Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon. Both scrimmages will be held at the Artificial Turf Facility.
