COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team fell to No. 33-ranked University of Pennsylvania, 4-3. The loss is the Terps' third for the season, Maryland lost to both Virginia Commonwealth and Ohio State in February by the same score.
The No. 1 doubles team of junior Delila Causevic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and sophomore team captain, Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) downed Penn's Alice Pirsu and Rachel Shweky, 8-4. The duo is 8-0 against non-conference opponents in spring play. However, Penn notched wins in the other two doubles matches. Quakers Raluca Ciulei and Shelah Chao defeated Maryland's Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) and Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.), 8-5. Senior Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) and Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France) lost in a close match, by the score of 8-6.
Penn's No. 24-ranked Pirsu squeaked by Causevic, a two-time All-ACC selection, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Marker defeated Nicole Ptak, 6-1, 7-5 and Floro battled Sanela Kunovac to win by the score of 6-3, 7-6. Maryland lost at the No. 4 and No.5 positions, Jedrzejak lost in straight sets and Chavardes lost in the deciding third set. Freshman DeCamilla extended her singles win streak to 8-0 by handing Michelle Yeh a 6-2, 6-2 loss.
