The Terrapins men's soccer team announced it's 2002 schedule Friday, which includes the past two NCAA College Cup winners, Connecticut and North Carolina. Maryland meets a total of nine teams, who made the NCAA field last season, including three other ACC teams.
"We will once again be challenged by one of the toughest schedules in college soccer," said head coach Sasho Cirovski. "In addition to the always-strong ACC schedule, we will face several national and regional powers. This schedule will showcase the competion of Maryland's return to the forefront of the college game and my team is extremely excited about the opportunity to prove itself. A large part of my philosophy is measuring yourself against quality opponents. A schedule like this and the schedules we play every year excite me."
For the third consecutive year, the Terps begin the regular season at the 2002 Virginia Soccer Classic and will meet Rhode Island on August 30 at 5 p.m. at Klockner Stadium. The Terps tangle with NCAA tourney participant Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 1 to round out the weekend. The Terps hit the road next, traveling to Wake Forest on Sept. 28 and entertaining 2001 NCAA champion North Carolina on Oct. 5 for back-to-back ACC contests. Three away dates face the Terps after their meeting with last year's College Cup winner. On Oct. 9, Maryland travels to Georgetown followed by an Oct. 12 game with 2000 College Cup champion Connecticut in Storrs, Conn.
