Men's Lacrosse Assistant Coach Graham Niemi Hired By Washington College

June 20, 2002

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington College has announced the hiring of Graham Niemi as their new defensive coordinator for men's lacrosse. A former midfielder at the University of Maryland, Niemi previously served as an assistant coach for the Shoremen in 1999 and 2000.

Niemi began his coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Anne Arundel Community College in 1998, helping the program to the junior college national championship. After spending the following two seasons with the Shoremen, Niemi went to work for Loyola coach Dave Cottle in 2001. When Cottle became the head coach at Maryland for the 2002 season, Niemi followed him back to his alma mater.

As a senior at Maryland in 1996, Niemi won the William Cole Memorial Award as the team's top midfielder. He served as an assistant coach while completing his degree the following year.

In addition to serving as the Shoremen's defensive coordinator, Niemi will serve as recruiting coordinator and will head the team's fundraising efforts.

WC head coach J.B. Clarke remarked, "We are very excited to have Coach Niemi with us. He brings tremendous knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to our program. Graham's tireless work ethic combined with his ability to recruit make him a great addition to our staff. With this hire, Washington College has added to its rich tradition of excellence in men's lacrosse."
