Henderson And Perry Among 10 Collegiate Honorees

July 11, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland football players E.J. Henderson and Bruce Perry have been selected by the College Football Hall of Fame as two of 10 players who will be featured as part of a display called "Race for the Pantheon."

The exhibit displays information and the jerseys of the players who the CFHOF considers the top prospects for various postseason awards (Heisman, Camp, Maxwell, O'Brien, Lombardi, Outland, Nagurski, Thorpe, Walker and Butkus awards) for the 2002 season.

Bruce Perry became the fifth Terp ever to rush for over 1,000 yards last season.

Henderson, a senior from Aberdeen, is the Hall's choice as the favorite for the Butkus Award which goes to Division I-A's top linebacker. Henderson is the lone returnee among last year's group of three finalists. Perry, a native of Philadelphia, was chosen as the leading candidate for the Doak Walker Award, an award which recognizes the nation's top running back. Like Henderson, Perry is the lone returnee among last year's finalists.

The selection of two Terrapins marks the first time since the exhibit began in 1995 that a pair of student-athletes from the same school have been chosen to be a part of the project. The other players who will be a part of the 2002 exhibit are Miami's Ken Dorsey, USC's Troy Polamalu, Florida's Rex Grossman, Georgia Tech's Greg Gaithers, Marshall's Byron Leftwich, Michigan State's Charles Rogers, Georgia's John Stinchcomb and Wisconsin's Anthony Davis.

The display will be presented some time in late August while the Terps open their 2002 season on August 31st against Notre Dame in the last-ever Kickoff Classic.
