Howley & U.S. Men's Lacrosse Team Move To 2-0 In World Championships

The U.S. National men's lacrosse team is 2-0 at the 2002 World Championships being held in Perth, Australia after defeating host Australia, 22-7 on Sunday and beating the Iroquois Nationals, 21-6 on Saturday.

Maryland All-American defenseman Michael Howley has seen time on close defense for Team USA.

On Sunday, Kevin Lowe (Princeton '94) had four goals and Michael Powell (Syracuse '04) added three goals and four assists to lead the United States past host Australia 22-7 during the second day of play of the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. The U.S., which defeated the Iroquois Nationals 21-6 on Saturday.

The U.S. jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and outshot Australia 51-27 in the contest. Darren Lowe (Brown '92), the only member of the U.S.'s winning team from 1998 on this year's squad, added three goals and three assists and Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02) had three goals. U.S. goalies Chris LaMonica (Hartford '97) and Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) combined to make 11 saves. Australia was led by Darren Nicholas with four goals.

The U.S. plays against Canada on Tuesday, July 9.
