COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The top news coming out of day three of the Terrapins' fall football camp occurred off the field, as word came back late Monday afternoon that the injury to starting cornerback Curome Cox's middle finger on his right hand wasn't as serious as originally thought.
Cox, who is entering his third season as a starter, suffered an open dislocation of the finger during the morning practice session and underwent surgery to repair the volar plate this afternoon. "There was no fracture and the tendons were intact," said head trainer Sandy Worth.
Cox is scheduled to be re-evaluated by team physician Dr. Brian Crites on Thursday. A return date has not been determined.
Junior tailback Bruce Perry, who has been bothered by the abdominal strain that has plagued him since the Orange Bowl, did not work out Monday morning. His status is day-to-day.
Second-year head coach Ralph Friedgen singled out the play of quarterbacks Chris Kelley and Scott McBrien after the morning session.
"Chris Kelley had his best day throwing in a long while," said Friedgen of the redshirt sophomore. "The quarterbacks are starting to get the picture. Scott McBrien has been much better than in the spring. I'm anxious to see him in a scrimmage. He's getting more comfortable with the passing game."
When asked his timetable for establishing a No. 1 signal-caller, Friedgen answered: "I won't go later than next Tuesday, maybe before that. If it's not clear cut, I may go with two."
The Terps are scheduled for 9:15 a.m. and 7:10 p.m. workouts on Tuesday. Practices are open to MGN and Terrapin Club members. Members must register with the football office (301-314-7095) in advance.
