COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Ralph Friedgen put his team through a two-hour scrimmage inside Byrd Stadium this afternoon but gave no indication afterwards who the Terps' starting quarterback vs. Notre Dame might be.
"Today was so close," said Friedgen of the competition between junior Scott McBrien and sophomore Chris Kelley, both of whom are vying for the spot vacated by Shaun Hill, now with the Minnesota Vikings. "I may be like [Redskins coach] Steve [Spurrier] and say you'll find out [who the starter is] when the guy takes the field [vs. Notre Dame]."
Maryland opens its 2002 campaign vs. Notre Dame Aug. 31 in the Kickoff Classic. The game, to be televised nationally on ABC, is sold out.
Junior tailback Bruce Perry, the ACC's Offensive Player of the Year last season, strained his left groin in warm-ups and did not participate in the scrimmage. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday.
The Terps are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 5:15 workouts on Wednesday.
