COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Over 1700 fans witnessed the Terps' 1-0 exhibition loss to DC United on Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. Ryan Nelson scored the lone goal of the evening, with Maryland's Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va,) tallying six big saves for the Terps. The game was the first since the addition of almost 1000 new seats just feet from the touchline at Ludwig Field.
Maryland played a strong first half, with sophomore Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) threatening twice in the 24th minute. DC United's Mike McGinty weathered the storm, smothering Mediate's attempts as well as one more in the half by junior transfer Nino Marantonio (Bethesda, Md.).
DC United outshot the Terps and eventually got one past sophomore goalkeeper Palmer with less than 20 minutes remaining to make the score 1-0. Jose Alegria crossed the corner through the box to Nelsen who slipped the goal between the Terps' defense and into the net.
Maryland's next exhibition game is on Friday, August 23, at Columbus Crew Stadium vs. Ohio State. That game begins at 7 p.m. The Terrapins' regular season begins at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, with the Maryland/FILA Classic opening regular season action at Ludwig Field on Sept. 6 and 8.
