COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
After a pair of Wednesday practices termed "sluggish" by Ralph Friedgen, the second-year Terrapin coach is expecting a quick bounce-back by his team when it hits the field for a lone practice session Thursday afternoon.
"We were sluggish in both practices today," said Friedgen Wednesday evening, shortly after the Terps concluded their 20th practice session since opening camp 11 days ago. "I'm hoping that we start getting our legs back and start practicing the way we did during all of two-a-days. We've been having good practices so we were probably due for a slow one."
On Thursday, the Terps start game-planning for Notre Dame. "I'm sure the intensity will pick up at that time," said Friedgen.
Results of Bruce Perry's MRI on his injured left groin are not expected until Thursday, according to the team's training staff. Perry, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year last season, suffered the injury while warming up for the Terps' scrimmage on Tuesday. Perry did not participate in the scrimmage.
Junior free safety Madieu Williams is less than 10 days away from making his major college debut and showing why the Terrapin coaches have spoken so highly of the transfer from Towson University.
"He's an excellent football player who has had a tremendous camp," said Friedgen of the 6-1, 193-pounder from Lanham, Md. "He plays like a linebacker and covers like a DB. I'm happy he's part of our program."
Williams redshirted last season after transferring from Towson, where he played in 20 games over the course of the 1999 and 2000 seasons. His desire to play Division I football led him to College Park, where the former walk-on hopes to follow in the footsteps of another Towson transfer, defensive back Chad Scott, who made a successful transition to the major college ranks and became a first-round NFL draft choice.
The Terps' annual FanFest is slated to follow the team's Saturday afternoon workout. Terrapin fans are invited to watch the practice, which is scheduled to run from 3:30-5:40 p.m. on the team's practice field, and obtain autographs afterwards.
The first 500 fans will receive free Terrapin football T-shirts. In addition, there will be a Pepsi interactive game and football giveaways.
Free parking is available near Cole Field House, in Lots 1 and Z.
The team's practice field is located along Stadium Drive (behind Byrd Stadium and adjacent to Shipley Field).
