COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Results from an examination of University of Maryland tailback Bruce Perry's injured groin muscle showed that the junior suffered a third degree tear of his left groin (adductor longus) muscle. The injury took place during warmups before Tuesday's scrimmage in Byrd Stadium.
No surgical repair is necessary and the schedule for Perry's recovery is simply rest and then gradual rehabilitation before returning to play. The anticipated recovery time is 4-8 weeks.
"Bruce's injury is very unfortunate for us as a team," said head coach Ralph Friedgen. "The good news is that he did not tear the tendon off of the bone and it looks like he will be able to come back at some point this year. If there is some silver lining, I think that's it. Bruce is determined to rehab and get back on the field as soon a possible."
Perry was the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the lone returning finalist from last year's Doak Walker Award. He ran for 1,242 yards as a sophomore last year, his first season as the Terps' starter. In addition, he finished ninth in the nation a year ago in all-purpose yards with an average of 156.2 yards per game.
