
No. 6 Terps Begin Three-Game Homestand On Wednesday With William & Mary

No. 6 Maryland (5-1, 1-0 ACC) returns home for a three-game stint this week, starting with William & Mary (2-3, 0-0 CAA) on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils are next up on Ludwig Field on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m., followed by Manhattan on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m to round-out the three-game homestand before traveling to Wake Forest on Sept. 28.
Getting Things Started
The No. 6 Terps 5-1 start is the team's best start since the 1999 season when Maryland was 6-1 heading into the Duke game. The then-No. 1 Terps lost a 3-0 decision in Durham for only their second loss of that season on Sept. 25.
All-Time Series vs. The Tribe
Maryland All-Time vs. William & Mary: Maryland and William & Mary have met only four times in the two program's histories, with the series tied at two wins apiece. Maryland has won its last two meetings with the Tribe, a 2-1 victory in 2000 at Ludwig Field and a 1-0 overtime win at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in 1999. William & Mary got the jump in the series, taking the first meeting in 1996 3-0 in the NCAA second round. The Tribe also beat Maryland 1-0 in 1998. Both games were played at Ludwig Field.
Current Terps vs. William & Mary
Current Terps Against William & Mary: Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) is the only Terp who has scored a goal against William & Mary. Thompson hit the game-winner in the 2000 contest. Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) is the only other current Terp to score against the Tribe. In 1999 match-up, Buete assisted Taylor Twellman's (1998-99) header in overtime to grab Maryland's first win ever over the Tribe.
Terps Move Up to No. 6
The University of Maryland men's soccer team climbed to No. 6 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll this week after spending the weekof Sept. 9 in the 10-spot. Six of the Terps' opponents this season are ranked in the current poll, including No. 20 Duke, who Maryland hosts on Sunday.
Maryland was also ranked 10th in the NSCAA preseason poll, but fell out of the rankings after a one-goal loss to then-No. 20 Kentucky at the Virginia Soccer Classic during week one of the season. This past weekend, the Terps raised their record to 3-1 after defeating Penn State 2-1 and Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 to win the Maryland/FILA Classic.
Maryland is Tops in this Week's Regional Rankings
Maryland has moved to the top of the South Atlantic Region's rankings after downing Loyola, last week's top team in the region, and NC State last week to raise its record to 5-1. Maryland is followed in the top eight by, in rank order, American (5-1-0), Virginia (3-2-0), Loyola (3-1-0), George Mason (4-0-1), VCU (4-2-0), James Madison (4-2-0), and Navy (4-3-0).
UM vs. Ranked Opponents
The then-No. 10 Terps' meeting with No. 8 Loyola was the second time this season Maryland has met an opponent ranked in the NSCAA Top 25. The first time then-No. 20 Kentucky upset the Terps 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic when Maryland was ranked No. 10. On Sept. 11, the Terrapins earned a commanding 3-1 win over then-No. 8 Loyola, also when Maryland was ranked No. 10.
Maryland Enters Week ACC's No. 2 Team
After beginning the conference season with a 3-0 win at NC State, Maryland (5-1, 1-0 ACC) sits behind Wake Forest (3-0-1, 1-0) in this week's ACC standings. The duo is followed by Duke (3-1-1, 1-0), North Carolina (4-2-0, 0-0-0), Clemson (2-1-1, 0-1), Virginia (3-2, 0-1) and NC State (1-4, 0-1).
Terps on the ACC Charts
Several Terrapins are on the ACC charts this week after helping Maryland to a 5-1 start. Among those ranked are Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) and Abe Thompson, who are tied for No. 2 in points per game with 2.00 a game. Thompson is second in goals per game with 0.83 gpg, while Sumed is third with 0.67 gpg a game. Junior Nino Marcantonio (Bethesda, Md.) is tied for sixth with 0.50 goals per game. Sumed holds the lead for game-winning goals, with 3, scoring the Terps' game-winner an average of every-other game.
In the assist category, it's Sumed again in the No. 3 spot averaging 0.67 assists per game. Tri-captains Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) and Scott Buete are tied for fourth in the conference with 0.50 apg.
Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) is showing the way in the goals against category in the ACC, posting a 0.89 goals against average.
As a team, Maryland is leading the following categories: points per game (10.5 ppg), goals per game (3.5 gpg), assists per game (3.5 apg), shutouts (2) and goals against average (0.83).
