COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore criminal justice major Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, VA) of the men's soccer team and senior kinesiology major Carey Brennan of the women's volleyball team have been chosen the student athletes of the week for their performances in athletic competition for the week of September 9.
Thompson boosted the Terrapins to a 1-0 record in the ACC with their win over NC State last Saturday. NC State was dominated by an onslaught of shots on goal and penalty kicks, yet it was Thompson's game-winning goal that started the Terps' scoring on their way to a decisive 3-0 shutout. His goal was scored off a penalty kick in the 36th minute. Thompson also added an assist in the game and finished with three points for the day. He is tied for leading scorer on the squad with 12 points. The men are off to a strong start as they have a 5-1 record for the season.
Brennan, a 2001 All-ACC selection, came out hitting hard last weekend in the Terrapin Invitational at College Park. She was the MVP of the tournament for her unyielding kills in all three matches. Against Indiana and Boston College she posted 15 and 16 kills, respectively. In the championship game she recorded 26 kills against Loyola-Marymount. Her last kill of that match set a new school record of 1,278 kills, as Brennan surpassed Colleen Hurley's career kills record of 1,277. In 2002, she has posted 109 kills and a team-leading 104 digs on the season. She leads the Terps with a .319 hitting percentage overall. Maryland is off to its second-best start in its NCAA Division I history with a record of 10-0, and is just one of 11 teams in the country that remains unbeaten.
