A pair of Maryland midfielders were selected in the 2002 National Lacrosse League Draft held this past weekend. Honorable mention All-American Nate Watkins was selected by the New York Saints with the 20th overall selection in the second round. Mike LaMonica was taken by the Philadelphia Wings in the eighth round with the 92nd overall selection.
Watkins had a breakout season with the Terps as a senior in 2002, scoring 24 goals and adding seven assists for a career-best 31 points earning him honorable mention All-American status. Watkins netted a career-high six goals vs. Yale in the home finale on April 26 at Byrd Stadium.
LaMonica netted 24 goals and added four assists for 28 points in his senior campiagn. He had a career day with six goals and eight points in his collegiate final against UMBC. LaMonica finished his career with 68 goals and 82 points in 58 games from 1999-2002.
In other draft day news, new Maryland assistsant coach Paul Cantabene had his right traded from Colorado -- where the Washington Power have relocated -- to the Philadelphia Wings for Rory Graham.
