The University of Maryland, DGN Racing and Donnie Neuenberger have announced a partnership in what will be an impressive NASCAR fund raising program that will benefit the university, its athletic Terps and nature's "Terps."
On Saturday, September 21st, the Terrapin football team will be taking the field against Eastern Michigan. Meanwhile, the University of Maryland "Fear the Turtle" Busch Grand National race car will be taking the track for the first time at the MBNA America 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The race will be one of two that the car will be featured in as it will also see action in the NASCAR season opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February of 2003.
More importantly, the car is part of a fund raising program that benefits the University of Maryland, Maryland Athletics and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources "Terrapin Station" program. Through the sale of merchandise associated with the car, proceeds will be donated to UM, the athletics department and "Terrapin Station," an education and stewardship program designed to protect the Diamondback Terrapin and its habitat. It is the same unique program as that of "Fear the Turtle" merchandise where royalties earned from the trademark of a university's mascot are given back towards the protection of its namesake in its natural habitat.
One side of the car will feature artwork celebrating the Terps' 2001-2002 national champion men's basketball team, while the other side will laud the efforts of Maryland's 2001 ACC champion football team.
"I am very proud to have been a resident of the state of Maryland my whole life," said Neuenberger. "I choose to live in this great state and it gives me pleasure to represent my Maryland-based fans and sponsors. What better way to celebrate Maryland Championships than to promote the school and programs with our NASCAR fans."
In addition to the actual racecar, there will be a "Fear the Turtle" 1:24 scale die cast replica car and a "Maryland Racing" t-shirt. For more information on the car or to order collectables, visit the DGN Racing website at www.dgnracing.com.
