COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps, led by freshman John-Henry Zarzycki's first dual meet pin, wrestled the NC State Wolfpack about as close as can be, but came up short with the Wolfpack winning 22-15.
The Terps opened the match losing the first two bouts and falling behind 6-0 early. Zarzycki then faced NC State's Ryan McCallum and with just over 1:00 left in the second period scored an impressive pin to tie the match at six.
Sophomore Adam James then lost to defending ACC champion Jacob Giamoni 7-3 in the 149-pound weight class, but Jason Kiessling once again tied the match with a decision over Bryant Reams to tie the match for the third and final time at nine.
The Terps then took a big hit when Dustin Kawa, another defending ACC champion, scored a major decision over Jason Ellis, and Pat Cissne lost to Kevin Gabelson to put the Terps down 16-9.
Senior Jake Stork continued his dominant season, recording his 25th win with a 5-3 decision over Jon Godwin.
Fellow senior Sal Aquia followed with an impressive win over Dan Humphries. With Humphries leading in the waning seconds of the match, Aquia scored a takedown to secure the win, and put the Terps within striking distance of taking the lead at 16-15.
In just his first match on the season, NC State's Leroy Harris pinned Eric Fehnel to finally finish off the Terps and win the match by a score of 22-15.
Maryland fell to 2-3 on the season, and 0-1 in ACC play, while the Wolfpack improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in the ACC.
The Maryland Terrapins will be in action next on Wed. Jan. 22 at the Comcast Center against George Mason. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
