The University of Maryland gymnastics team will travel to the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga. to take on the No. 3 ranked Georgia on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Terps are 3-4 on the season while the Bulldogs remain undefeated since dropping their first meet to Nebraska.
A Southeastern conference competitor, Georgia is 8-1 in 2003 after finishing second at last year's NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs bring back eight letterwinners, including six All-Americans. Lone senior Cassie Bair and juniors Chelsa Byrd and Cory Fritzinger lead the Bulldogs.
At their last contest a week earlier against Michigan, Georgia set season highs for team scores on bars (49.525) and floor (49.625). Freshman Jamie Ackerman posted a 9.875 and 9.950, on the bars and the floor, respectively, in the win.
To date, Georgia leads the all-time series over Maryland 21-0.
TERPS WIN HOME OPENER
Maryland defeated Temple, 193.450-190.525, at the Comcast Center. Top performances were delivered by junior Sarah Hoenig and freshman Rachel Martinez. Both gymnasts posted a 9.900, on the beam and the floor, respectively. Martinez, the only all-around competitor during the evening, finished with a 39.125.
Terp freshmen, Martinez and Kristi Skowronski led Maryland on the vault and the bars. Martinez notched a team high 9.700 on the vault and Skowronski stepped up on the bars, earning a 9.825 for her routine.
Hoenig, the 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, returned back to form, eaning a 9.900 on the beam. The mark tied Hoenig's career high at Maryland, which she set in 2001 and 2002. Other Terps excelled on the beam as well. Martinez delivered with a 9.825 and senior Catherine Gardner and freshman Cameron Logan hit their consistent, 9.700.
The Terps dazzled the crowd on the floor exercise; each Maryland gymnast earned above a 9.600. Martinez posted 9.900 and Logan earned a 9.750. Both juniors, Katherine Schroeder and Hoenig, earned a 9.725.
