UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Marie Harper led Maryland with a final-round 75 on Sunday to earn a tie for ninth individually and lead the Terrapins to a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational at Penn State's Blue Course.
Harper (West Point, Va.) moved from 11th to ninth overall with her final round, completing the tournament with a 54-hole total of 227 and ranking as the top Terrapin finisher. As a team, Maryland fell to 316 on Sunday after shooting 299 and 300 in the opening two rounds Saturday, finishing the tournament at 915.
Carol Green of James Madison shot a stellar 68, five shots better than any other player on Sunday, to earn the individual title. Her total of 212 was nine shots better than Jenny Schnipke of Bowling Green, who rallied with a final-round 73.
Green's strong round led the Dukes to the team title, as they rallied from fourth to first with a final-round 295 to finish at 900. Penn State was second just one stroke behind, with Rollins in third just three strokes back.
Freshman Kate Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Kristen Shew (Hockessin, Del.) each shot 82 for Maryland on Sunday to finish in a tie for 13th at 229. Katie Redeker (Pepper Pike, Ohio) closed with a 79 in the final round to tie for 19th at 232, giving Maryland four players in the top 20.
Jessica Reno (Wilmington, Del.) shot 80 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 33rd at 241, while Kelly MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.), playing in the tournament as an individual entrant, was 57th at 258 following an 86 in the final round.
