COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland men's soccer team will take on Penn Tuesday night at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Terrapins (12-1) are coming off a 1-0 victory last Thursday against Penn State. Sumed Ibrahim continued his hot play for the Terps by heading in the game-winner on a corner kick from Seth Stammler. Noah Palmer made three saves in goal to preserve Maryland's ninth shutout of the season. The Terps have won three in a row since falling to No. 3 North Carolina.
The Quakers picked up their first Ivy League win of the season against Dartmouth on Saturday. Penn scored the game-winner in almost the exact same fashion as Maryland did against Penn State as freshman Charles Howard headed in a corner kick from Joshua Duyan.
Current Terp assistant Rob Vartughian was an assistant coach at Penn for two seasons before joining the staff at Maryland. Vartughian helped the Quakers to their first Ivy League championship in 22 years and their first NCAA Tournament bid in 25 years. Current Penn assistant, Bob Butehorn, was on Sasho Cirovski's staff in the early 1990's and helped Cirovski in guiding Maryland back into national prominence.
This will be just the second time in history that the two schools have faced each other. Maryland won the other meeting, 1-0, in 1969.
