COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen, in conjunction with TVWorldwide.com, announces the launch of a new, internet TV-based website, "FridgeTV.com." Though it has been in development all season, FridgeTV will officially launch this weekend with a live webcast following Saturday's homecoming contest with the University of North Carolina.
"In my opinion, FridgeTV is a whole new concept when it comes to the internet and what it can do for a football program," said Coach Friedgen. "I think the exposure that our program will have from a marketing standpoint, from a recruiting standpoint, and the overall expression of what our program is will not be able to be equaled."
"We believe that Maryland Athletics will be the first collegiate sports program to offer such web-based video content," said Deborah Yow, Director of Athletics. "It is a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day lives of our football student-athletes and coaches in their quest for excellence academically and athletically."
The brainchild of former Terrapin and NFL placekicker-turned-broadcaster Jess Atkinson, FridgeTV has the most in-depth coverage of Maryland football available. Since the start of the season, Atkinson has had unprecedented access to the Terps, from the practice fields, to the locker room postgame, to press conferences and media events. This weekend, the site will have some of that action available for review while also producing the site's first live event, featuring Coach Friedgen's postgame press conference following the North Carolina game.
"This has been an experiment from the start, and we didn't know exactly how it would turn out," commented Atkinson. "But the response we've received from focus groups and those who have seen the content was an indication that we should take it out from under wraps now and launch it before the end of the season. It's been great working with Coach Friedgen, the Athletics Department, TVWorlwide.com and Yahoo! Sports during this process."
Yahoo! Sports has agreed to feature and promote the content in a separate distribution agreement with Maryland Athletics. TVWorldwide.com is a fast-growing web-based global television network specializing in net broadcasting and streaming media. Visitors to the site (www.fridgetv.com) should download the free Real Video or Windows Media Player prior to visiting the site. For live events, viewers should log on 5-10 minutes prior to start times.
