Oct. 4, 2003
* The University of Maryland football team moved to 4-2 (1-1 ACC) on the season with its 21-7 win over Clemson, its fourth consecutive victory. The Tigers now stand at 3-2 (1-1 ACC).
* The Terrapins have now won three consecutive in the series and have moved a little closer in the all-time series, which now stands at 27-23-2 in Clemson's favor.
* Maryland's three-game win streak is its first against the Tigers in 26 years. The Terps last won three or more in a row when they rattled off six between 1972 and 1977.
* With their win tonight, Maryland is now 16-1 at home under Ralph Friedgen.
* With its touchdown on the opening drive, Maryland accomplished two things. First, it scored a TD on its opening drive for the third time in six games this season and second, it scored first, which it has done in every game of 2003.
* QB Scott McBrien threw for three touchdown passes, tying a career high last accomplished against Clemson last year. In his last four games, McBrien has completed 54-of-87 for 854 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.
* With his three touchdown passes, McBrien ties Stan Gelbaugh for ninth-place on Maryland's career touchdown list.
* Steve Suter's 25-yard touchdown on the Terrapins' opening drive was his first receiving TD of the season.
* WR Derrick Fenner's 69-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter was his longest of the season and marked the third game this year that he has had a reception of 50 yards or more. The reception was also the longest of the season for Maryland, and Fenner's second TD reception of the season (third of his career). For the season, Fenner is now averaging 36 yards per catch on six receptions and has Maryland's three longest receptions of the season (59, 62 and 69).
* Rich Parson's 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter was his first of the year and second of his career. His first came in the regular season finale last year against Wake Forest.
* Maryland had nine receivers catch a ball in today's game. In the last five games, the Terrapins have had no less than eight receievers catch a ball in any game.
* Charlie Whitehurst's 70-yard TD pass to WR Derrick Hamilton in the second quarter was the longest of the season against Maryland and the first score of 50 yards or more against the Terrapins since Sept. 14, 2002 (C. Rix to T. Gardner, FSU, 56 yards).
* The Terp defense was stout against the run in the first half, holding Clemson to minus 14 yards on 13 carries. The Tigers were held to 10 yards rushing for the entire game, the fewest yards allowed on the ground by the Terp defense since it held Troy State to -1 yards rushing on Nov. 3, 2001.
* With four sacks totalling 29 lost yards against the Tigers, Maryland raised its total on the season to 18, which has netted 139 lost yards.
* In his second career start and first of the season, LEO Shawne Merriman had a big game, recording 6 solo tackles, including 2 sacks for a loss of 20 yards.
* Punter Adam Podlesh buried Clemson deep in their own territory on several occasions, finishing with 3 punts inside the 20-yard line. On the season, 13 of Podlesh's 28 punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line.
* Today's attendance was 51,545, the 11th-largest crowd in Byrd Stadium history. The sellout is Maryland's third in as many home games this year and the team's total attendance through three games is 155,112 (an average of 51,704 per game).
* Today marks the first time in school history that Maryland has seen three consecutive home games with attendance of 50,000 or more. Only one other season, 1985, saw the team hit 50,000 in any three games in one season.
* Next week's opponent, Duke, did not play this week. Its last game was a 56-7 loss to Florida State a week ago.
