COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielder Sumed Ibrahim and junior forward Abe Thompson are among the 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C) Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the top soccer player in the nation.
Three finalists will be named at the NCAA College Cup, and the winner will be announced Jan. 9, 2004, at the M.A.C.
Sumed, a 2002 semifinalist for the award, is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and five assists. The Tamale, Ghana, native was recently named to his third All-ACC First Team, the eighth player in Maryland history to accomplish the feat.
Thompson, a Fairfax Station, Va., native, was the Terps leading scorer before suffering a foot injury. Despite missing Maryland's last eight matches, Thompson is still third on the team in scoring (4g, 4a, 12 pts.). Thompson is expected to return to the Maryland lineup this weekend at the ACC Tournament.
The Terrapins (16-2, 5-1), the ACC regular season champs, will face the winner of the NC State-North Carolina match on Friday, Nov. 14, at 5:30 p.m. The ACC Tournament is being held at the SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C.
