Maryland freshman Shay Doron's free throw shooting helped Maryland pull away from Coppin State in the closing minutes and lead the Terrapins to a season-opening 79-64 victory over the Eagles.
As a team, Maryland was 36-44 (82%) at the free throw line, while Coppin State managed just 10-16. Doron was 23-27 from the stripe, setting Maryland single-game records for makes and attempts, and tying the NCAA record for makes in a game. She was just 1-8 from the field, but finished with a game-high 25 points in her debut.
Washington's Shaunda Greene also made 23 free throws against Northern Illinois in 1991.
Maryland (1-0) got out to the early lead, stretching the Terp advantage to 21-11 after Charmaine Carr's jumper with 11:35 to play in the first half. The Eagles (0-1) took advantage of 14 Maryland turnovers and 12 points off the bench from Antoinette Reese to get back into the game, and eventually took the lead at 25-23 on a pair of Monique Lewis free throws. The Terp defense buckled down at the end of the half, limiting the Eagles to just seven points over the final seven minutes.
Coppin State scored 17 points off of Maryland turnovers in the first half.
The Terrapins looked as if they put the game away in the second half after Chrissy Fisher's three-pointer gave them their largest lead of the night at 60-44 with just over 11 minutes left to play. However, the Eagles went on a 16-4 run to close the gap to 64-60 with just under three minutes remaining. Maryland scored 10 of its last 15 points from the free throw line and got a three pointer from Fisher to put the game out of reach.
Carr and Delvona Oliver came off the bench to score double figures for the Terps, with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Kalika France grabbed 10 rebounds, including four offensive, to go along with eight points and three assists. Alli Spence handed out a game-high seven assists and chipped in eight points.
Maryland will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 23, to take on Niagara at 1 p.m. at Comcast Center.
