Wrestling Completes Day At Cornell Body Bar Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team finished competition today in its first tournament of the season. Sophomore Jason Kiessling led the Terps as he placed fifth at 157 at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational. Kiessling won four matches including a 12-2 decision over Army's Phillip Eggleston, while losing only one match. The loss came against Paul Bjorlo of Virginia who placed third at 157.
Junior Jason Gribschaw won three matches during the tournament at 141. After earning a 9-2 decision in his first match, Gribschaw lost his second round match. He was then paired up with teammate, sophomore Bryan Rizzo. Gribschaw came out on top 2-1 after two tie-breaks. Rizzo earned the first pin of his career as he pinned Scott Aronowitz of Ithaca in 3:23 in his second match of the competition.
At 125, senior Matt Pandullo came up with two wins and two losses in the tournament. His two losses came against the third and fifth place finishers respectively. Sophomore David Jacovsky defeated Kyle Kemmerer of Ithaca with a 3-0 decision at 125 in his opening match.
Freshman Jerad Villecco won two matches in the 149-pound weight class in his first competition at the collegiate level. After defeating Jared Wolfley of Cornell with a 5-2 decision in the first round, Villecco lost to Mark Cartell of Drexel who placed second at 149.
Junior co-captain John Antonelli pinned Ryan Jantzen of Binghamton in 6:21 during his first round match at 165. Antonelli then fell to the eventual champion, Matt King of Edinboro. Antonelli was able to add one more win as he earned an 8-4 decision over Keith O'Donnell of Cornell.
In the 174-pound weight class, junior Dan Scheets earned his first pin of the season coming against Dan Watts of Edinboro in 4:45. Freshman Jerry Afari also recorded the first pin of his collegiate career in 2:46 against Scott Smith of Virginia at 197. Freshman David Blais also saw his first action at the collegiate level in the 197-pound weight class.
Sophomore Barry Stein was able to pick up a 9-6 decision over Andrew Leffler of Virginia. Also competing in the tournament for the Terps were junior Mike Lupa at 133, senior Matt Kenny at 157 and junior Sean Fehn at 174.
The Maryland wrestling team travels to the Penn State Open at State College, Pa., on Dec. 7 for its next action of the season.
