Six members of the Maryland wrestling team competed at the East Stroudsburg Open Saturday. This was the first tournament action of the season for these Terps as some of their teammates were wrestling at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational.
Sophomore Jonathan Gunther led the Terps with two victories on the day, including his first pin of the season at 149. After losing his opening match to Eric Norgaard of Columbia by decision, Gunther pinned Kevin Ramirez of Army in 3:46. Gunther's other win came by forfeit.
In the 157-pound weight class, sophomore Luke Stauffer began his season off right by edging out Brandon Kaufman of Harvard with an 8-7 decision. In the next round, Stauffer lost to Charlie Brennema of Lock Haven, who was the eventual runner-up. Stauffer then forfeited his final match of the tournament.
With a 6-1 decision over Kenny Williams of TCNJ, junior Adam Beytin earned his first win of the season. In his next match, Beytin lost a decision to the eventual champion, Jeremy Reitz of Clarion. Beytin fell to unattached wrestler, Jason Giandomenico, in his final match.
Sophomore Zach Wendal represented the Terps at 141. He was unable to pick up a victory as he lost by decision to Milo Adams of Princeton and then to unattached wrestler Doug Thomas.
At 149, freshman Mike Dowling lost a decision to Adrian Austin of George Mason who placed second. In his second match, Dowling fell short in a decision against Aaron Martin who was unattached.
Rounding out the tournament for the Terps was freshman Matt Rothstein in the 149-pound weight class. Rothstein lost his two matches of the tournament by decision to unattached wrestlers Mike Perinotti and Jad Duca.
The Terrapin wrestling team will travel to State College, Pa., for the Penn State Open on Dec. 7 for its next action of the season.
