UMES Advances to Championship Game of Terrapin Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland-Eastern Shore came back from a late eight-point deficit and defeated Louisiana Lafayette, 60-57, in the first round of the Terrapin Classic at Comcast Center on Friday afternoon. UMES plays the winner of the Sacred Heart/Maryland contest in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns play the loser of that game at 12:30 p.m.
Louisiana Lafayette (1-1) led, 32-28, at halftime, limiting the Fighting Hawks to a 27.8 shooting percentage from the field. ULL's Bernette Tolston led all scorers at the break with 12 points, going 4-for-7 from behind the three-point arc.
UMES (2-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game before the Ragin' Cajuns fought back to even the score at 5-5. After UMES pushed its lead back up to five points, 10-5, ULL went on an 11-5 run capped by an Octavia Thompson three pointer, giving ULL its first lead of the game, 16-15. Louisiana Lafayette led by as many as nine points, 28-19, at 5:53, before closing out the half with a 32-38 advantage.
The Fighting Hawks trailed by eight points, 46-38, at 9:31 and used a 22-11 run to finish the game and go away with the win. The Hawks' Tiffany Winkfield, who had just three points in the first half, scored 13 points in the second half, including 11 points over the final 7:18 to lead her team to the win.
ULL's Tolston ended the game with 15 points, while Ashley Blanche added 11. Petrakova gabbed 10 rebounds and had two blocks.
Winkfield's 16 points led all scorers. She also had 14 rebounds for the double-double, to go along with four steals and three blocks.
