* The Terps (10-7-1 overall, 2-5 ACC) are hot heading into the 2003 Tournament, having won three of their last four games. The Terps posted a 2-1 victory over Navy in their regular-season finale on Sunday night at Ludwig Field. The Terps' top two scorers Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) and Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) scored the team's two goals. Francis leads the scoring parade with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. Andrzejewski has come on late in the season and has 14 points on five goals and four assists.
* The Tigers are 11-5-2 also 4-3 in the league. They finished third -- winning the tie-breaker with Duke by virtue of their 1-0 win in South Carolina on Oct. 24. The Tigers are riding a four-game winning streak having beaten conference opponents Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia over the last three weeks. Prior to the hot streak they had lost three in a row including that 2-1 decision to Maryland. Tigers are led by freshman Courtney Foster, who has 31 points on 13 goals and five assists. Allison Graham is among league leaders in assists with 10 and also has five goals for 20 points. Clemson's goalkeeper Lauren Whitt has allowed just 14 goals and has a 0.79 goals against average, starting all 18 games and playing all but 63 minutes. She joined the Tigers as a sixth-year senior student after finishing five years at Vanderbilt.
Series History: Could It Be a One-goal Game Again?
* Maryland and Clemson have a history of playing tight games including this season's 2-1 game at Ludwig Field. Last season, the Terps became the first team in the 12-game series to win on the road, 3-2 on Oct. 20, 2002. Overall, the Terps lead the series, 7-6, with Maryland outscoring the Tigers 19-18 goals in the 13 games. The last six regular-season games in the series have been one-goal affairs. Maryland is 6-0 all-time vs. Clemson at home.
* In this season's meeting on Oct. 10, Maryland capitalized on a Clemson defensive zone turnover 10 minutes into the game as Ali Andrzejewski blasted a shot from the left edge of the box past keeper Lauren Whitt, who had allowed only three goals all season coming into tonight with a 0.27 goals-against average. Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) trickled a header past a crowded Clemson goal line seven minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. Throw-in specialist Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) set up Mahar with a perfect entry pass. The Tigers struck 10 minutes later when Courtney Foster got past the Terp backline on a through pass from Allison Graham and touched it past keeper Kristen Barnhill for the 2-1 final.
* In last season's game, Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) scored the game-winning goal on a diving header shot off a rebound with 6:33 left in regulation to lift the Terps team to a 3-2 win at Riggs Field. The win was Maryland's first ever at Clemson in six games dating back to 1994. The Terps overcame a 1-0 deficit and a 2-1 deficit in the second half to come away with the win. Audra Poulin tied the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute as she volleyed a corner kick from Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) to the back post beating the Clemson keeper, Lauren Heos. The Tigers regained a 2-1 lead just 1:15 into the second half as Heather Beem converted a penalty kick after Maryland was called for a handball in the box. But the Terps rallied back as junior Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) scored a sensational goal in which she worked her way through three Clemson defenders and deposited the ball in the 63rd minute to tie the game.
* Clemson won the only ACC Tournament game -- and only neutral site game between the teams at the 2000 ACC Tournament held in Durham. The Tigers beat Maryland 2-0 in the first round in a game that started at 10 p.m. due to numerous overtimes and delays in the earlier games of the day.
