
Three Terps Advance at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three Maryland wrestlers advanced to the second day of the Southern Scuffle collegiate wrestling tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro, based on action from Sunday's preliminary rounds.
Matt Pandullo (125 pounds), Jason Kiessling (157) and Jerry Afari (195) each qualified for consolation-bracket rounds on Monday after surviving in double-elimination brackets on Sunday.
Maryland was in a tie for 16th in the team standings after the first day with 17 points. Missouri had 100 points on the first day and had nine wrestlers remaining in championship brackets. Minnesota was in second with 99.5 points, and had 10 wrestlers advance in the winners' brackets.
Pandullo won a pair of decisions at 125 before losing in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Bobbe Lowe of Minnesota. Pandullo beat John Neal of Gardner-Webb, 4-2, and Juan Sanchez of VMI, 2-0.
Kiessling dropped his first match of the tournament, losing a technical fall to top-seeded Kenny Burleson of Missouri in 6:35. He recovered with an 8-6 win over fellow Terrapin Matt Kenny and made it to Monday's rounds with a 17-3 major decision over VMI's P.J. Neumann.
Afari defeated Zach Garren of NC State, 7-6, and moved to the quarterfinals with a medical forfeit over Jaosn Powers. He also faced a No. 1-seed, however, losing a fall in 4:00 to Damion Hahn of Minnesota.
Jason Gribschaw went 2-2 for the Terps at 141 pounds, all in close decisions that ended in two- or three-point margins.
Rich Vasquez (125), Sean Fehn (174), Dan Scheets (184) and Barry Stein (285) each won a match on Sunday for Maryland.
