Razor Leads Terps To Overtime Victory In Front of Crowd Of 5,000

Feb. 1, 2003

College Park, Md. - Maryland held on for the 74-72 overtime win over NC State at the Comcast Center on Saturday night. Senior guard Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Saturday's attendance of 5,078 was the largest at a Maryland women's basketball game since Feb. 24, 1996, vs. Virginia.

After Alvine Mendeng put NC State up by two just five seconds into the game, it would take Maryland until the 6:06 mark when two free throws by Charmaine Carr (Brandywine, Md.) and a layup from Razor put the Terps up by three points. The Pack regained the lead minutes later and sprung out to an eight-point advantage by the half.

Razor and freshman center Carr led the Terps' first-half efforts with eight points each. Razor also notched six of her career-high tying 11 rebounds in the opening half.

NC State opened up a 10-point lead 5:31 into the second half before the Terps began to chip away the Wolfpack advantage. Maryland launched a 7-0 run over a seven-minute stretch ending with a Chrissy Fisher (Rumson, N.J.) three-point basket to bring the deficit down to three points. Fisher ended the night with 13 points and was one of four Terps in double figures.

The Terps didn't actually take the lead until the 1:43 mark on two free throws from Razor. NC State's Terah James tied it up with a jumper 11 seconds eventually sending the game into overtime tied 57-57.

On the strength of buckets from Fisher and Delvona Oliver (Euclid, Ohio), Maryland took a five-point lead in overtime and held on down the stretch for the 74-72 victory. It was Maryland's first overtime game of the season and spelled first-year head coach Brenda Frese's first overtime win at Maryland.

Maryland hits the road for a two-game stretch, beginning the away stint at Georgia Tech on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. The road trip continues on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Clemson. That game begins at 2 p.m. The Terps return home on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. vs. Wake Forest at the Comcast Center.
