COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's gymnastics team won its quad meet, defeating EAGL foe Towson and non-conferences rivals, James Madison and Texas Women's University. The Terps took first place with a score of 195.825, Towson came in second with a 195.400, James Madison came in third with a 190.600 and Texas Women's University finished fourth with a 190.225.With the win, Terps improve to 7-7 and remain a flawless, 5-0 at home.
Super freshmen Rachel Martinez tied for first in the all-around, with a score of 39.525. The mark ties Martinez with former All-American Gillian Cote, as the Terps' second highest all-time all-around leading scorer. Towson's Kristen Presutti also tied for first place with a 39.525.
Martinez placed in the top three in each event, posting a 9.900 on the vault and the bars, a 9.850 on the beam and a 9.875 on the floor. With these numbers, Martinez now boasts new career highs on the vault, bars and the beam.
The Terps' best event on the night was the bars. Compiling a team total of 49.275, which tied the team for its second highest all-time bars score, Maryland posted five marks of a 9.8 or better. Sophomore Mandy Pascual outshined her own performance against West Virginia (9.9) with a score of 9.925 to lead all scores. Pascual's 9.925 ties her for first place in Maryland's all-time record book. Freshmen Kristi Skowronksi posted a 9.850 on the bars.
Floor was another successful event for Maryland. Junior Sarah Hoenig, a 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, notched a 9.8 for her routine for the second highest team score. Martinez led the team with a 9.875.
Senior Catherine Gardner excelled on the beam, posting a season high 9.825. Freshmen Cameron Logan scored a team and career-high tying score of 9.875. Terp, junior Rachel Sibert too posted career high scores. Sibert scored a 9.800 on both the vault and the bars.
For Towson, Jenn Baierlein along with Presutti performed in top form. Baierlein finished third in the all-around with a score of 39.225. Texas Women's Luci Romberg came in fourth with a 38.625. James Madison's Erin Fitzgerald finished sixth in the all-around competition, with a 38.500.
Terps look to extend their two-meet win streak, as they host George Washington on Mar.1, back in the Comcast Center. Admission to the 7 p.m. scheduled meet is free.
