Rachel Martinez Earns EAGL Gymnast Of The Week Honors

  • Freshman Rachel Martinez, received EAGL Gymnast of the Week honors for her top performance at the quad meet. She tied for first in the all-around, with a score of 39.525, and now holds the record for the second highest all-time all-around score in school history. Martinez recorded new career highs on the vault, bars and the beam, posting a 9.9, 9.9 and a 9.850, respectively.

  • The Terps look to extend their two-meet win streak, as they host George Washington on Mar.1. Maryland won its quad meet defeating EAGL foe Towson and non-conferences rivals, James Madison and Texas Women's University. The Terps took first place with a score of 195.825, Towson came in second with a 195.400, James Madison came in third with a 190.600 and Texas Women's University finished fourth with a 190.225.With the win, Terps improve to 7-7 and remain a flawless, 5-0 at home.

  • On the bars, sophomore Mandy Pascual has been top Terp to watch. Pascual notched a 9.925 to lead all scores and is tied for first place on Maryland's all-time uneven bars scores list. Against West Virginia, Pascual scored an impressive 9.9. Several other Terps accomplished individual goals at the quad meet. Senior Catherine Gardner posted a season high 9.825 on the beam, junior Rachel Sibert posted a career high 9.800 on both the vault and the bars.

    MEET THE OPPONENT
  • Like Maryland, George Washington is also at the .500 mark half way through the 2003 season. The Colonials are 8-8, having defeated top schools from West Virginia and Rhode Island.

  • GW's 195.175-195.150 win over the Mountaineers on Feb. 23 was the team's highest score so far this season. GW has been dominating the Atlantic 10, winning its fifth straight conference title in 2002. Despite losing a core of their veterans to graduation, GW is backed by talent of its trio of co-captains, lone senior Melissa Suter and juniors Rachel Mann and Lindsay Parks. Mann has earned her way to become an all-around competitor this season, notching a 39.025 to win first place against West Virginia.

  • Three time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Margie Foster-Cunningham, will also look to her strong recuited freshmen class to add depth at each event. Freshman Heather Kaufman finished third in the all-around against West Virginia, with a score of 38.875. Newcomers Amy Stack and Tiffany Jones have also been posting solid on the bars and the beam, respectively.
