Nine Long Islanders Head Home As No. 3 Terps Travel To Stony Brook
* The No. 3 Maryland men's lacrosse will make its first-ever trip to Stony Brook to take on the Seawolves this Saturday at the brand-new LaValle Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the Internet on www.wusb.org. The trip marks Maryland's first trip to Long Island in more than 10 years as the Terps last played on the Island at Adelphi on March 11, 1992, a 18-8 Maryland victory. Saturday's game is the first ever between Maryland and Stony Brook in lacrosse. The Terps are the highest ranked team to play at Stony Brook since No. 2 Virginia played there on March 18, 2000.
* The game marks a homecoming for nine Terps, who are native Long Islanders. Included in that group are Stony Brook natives Chris and Willy Passavia, who both played at local high school power Ward Melville. Senior midfielder Ryan Moran, grew up in the town next to Stony Brook, Setauket and attended Chaminade High School. Fellow seniors and Tewaararon Trophy candidates Mike Mollot and Michael Howley will also be returning home, having grown up in nearby Holbrook and Wantagh, respectively. Also making the trip home are sophomore Matt Aksionoff (Baldwin, N.Y.) and freshmen Bret Caretsky (Northport, N.Y.), Ryan Lang (Northport, N.Y.) and Michael Hartofilis (Huntington, N.Y.).
* It will also be a homecoming for Maryland media relations director Jason Yellin, who grew up in the town of Stony Brook and graduated from Stony Brook in 1996.

Undefeated Terps Continue Winning Ways With Strong Offense
* No. 3 Maryland continued its winning ways with a 14-8 victory over Bucknell last Tuesday at the Artificial Turf Facility in College Park, to move to 3-0 overall. Senior midfielder Ryan Moran and freshman attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) each poured in four goals to lead the Terps' offense. For Moran, the four goals set a new career-high and gives him all 23 of his goals in his last 14 games, dating back to last season -- after never scoring his first two years with Maryland. For Walters, it marked the second straight game the left-handed attacker netted four goals, as he also scored four at Towson (3/8) and was named the WMAR-TV Star of the Game and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week. Walters, who also had two assists vs. Bucknell, stands atop the Terps' scoring chart with 13 points on eight goals and five assists.
* Moran and Walters are joined by graduate attacker Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) atop the Terps' goal chart as all three players have eight goals through three games this season. Hunt, who came to Maryland after graduating from Yale last spring, has 14 career hat tricks dating back to his career with the Bulldogs after posting one each in the first two games this season. He has scored a point in 37 consecutive games he has played in and has 139 career points (3.4 PPG).
* Senior midfidler and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Mike Mollot moved into 12th place on Maryland's all-time career assist chart with four helpers vs. Bucknell and now has 82 for his career. Earlier this season, Mollot moved into 19th on the Terps' career scoring chart with two points vs. Duke. He now has 140 points on 58 goals and 82 assists in three-plus seasons.
* The Terps' extra-man unit has been sensational early in this season scoring on more than 55 percent of its opportunities. Maryland has scored 10 goals on 18 chances led by Ryan Moran, who has three EMG's. Brian Hunt and Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) each have two extra-man tallies as well. In comparison, last season the Terps scored just 17 extra-man goals the entire season, on 63 chances (27 percent). The defense has held opponents to just five EMG's on 21 chances (24 percent).
Defense Holds Opponents Down
* The Terps' defense, the nation's best last year allowing seven goals a game, and has continued its prowess, allowing 7.67 goals per game, backstopped by preseason honorable mention goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.). Preseason first-team All-Americans Michael Howley and Chris Passavia have teamed with Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) and defensive middies Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Paul Gillette (Severna Park, Md.) to keep opponents at bay. Gillette leads the team in groundballs with 19, while Harper tops in caused turnovers with seven.
* The Terps' defense has continued to be stellar as it has had several runs of holding its opponents scoreless.

* Against Duke, the Terps held the then-No. 7 Blue Devils without a goal for 38 minutes spanning the final three quarters and to just one goal for nearly 50 minutes from midway in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter.
* Against Towson, Maryland held the Tigers without a goal for almost 18 minutes from the second to the third quarter and with just one goal from the late second to late fourth quarters.
* After a high-scoring 6-6 first quarter with Bucknell, Maryland buckled down and held the Bison off the scoreboard for more than 30 minutes and nearly shut them out for the second and third quarters before a fluke Bison goal with one second left in the third quarter.
* Overall, the Terps have outscored their opponents 39-23 (13-7.67) per game, but even more amazing is that opponents have just five goals total in the second and third quarters combined and 11 total for the second, third and fourth quarters. In contrast the Terps have 27 goals in the finak three periods (a 16 goal margin).
Series Notes With Stony Brook
* The Terps and Seawolves have never played in men's lacrosse. But the schools have played in men's basketball with Maryland winning 107-59 on Dec. 6, 2000 at Cole Field House.

Scouting The Seawolves
* Stony Brook comes into the game with a 1-2 record coming off a 9-4 victory over America East rival Binghamton last Wednesday at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves dropped their first two games of the season falling at No. 8 Massachusetts, 17-7 and UMBC, 12-6 last Sunday.
* The team's leading scorers are George LaFlare (four goals, six assists for 10 points) and Jason Cappadoro (six goals and one assist for seven points).
* Stony Brook head coach John Espey is in his 16th year with the Seawolves and has a 103-106 record. He also coached at Duke for six seasons from 1976-81. While at Duke, Espey lost all five games against Maryland.
* Last season, Stony Brook qualified for its first NCAA Tournament, winning the America East final, defeating Albany -- coached by former Maryland assistant coach Scott Marr -- 8-6. The Seawolves fell to Cornell, 12-3 in the first round of the NCAA's at Brown, finishing with a 10-7 record.
Howley and Mollot Named Tewaaraton Candidates
* Sixteen of the most talented male and female collegiate varsity lacrosse players in the United States and additional "players to watch" have been selected as candidates for the third annual Tewaaraton Award, the most coveted and prestigious award a varsity lacrosse player can receive and a symbol of excellence in college lacrosse. The five finalists will be announced in May.
* From Maryland, senior defenseman Michael Howley and senior midfielder/attackman Mike Mollot has been named to the list of the Top 16 candidates in the nation. Also, graduate attackman Brian Hunt has been named to the "Players to Watch" list. In addition, former Maryland coach Dick Edell is serving as the Vice Chair of the committee which presents the award.
* The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented annually following the collegiate season to the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse players in the United States. Scholarship money is given to the recipient's college or university general scholarship fund. The Foundation committee honors Native American heritage with the name "Tewaaraton," the name the Mohawk nation gave to their game and the progenitor of present day lacrosse and has received approval from the Mohawk Council of Elders.
Mollot Moves Up Terp Career Charts
* Senior captain Mike Mollot moved into 19th place all-time on Maryland's scoring charts in the program's storied lacrosse history against Duke and now has 140 points. With two points vs. Duke, he passed Dave Dempsey (1970-74), who had 134. Mollot currently has 58 goals and 82 assists for 140 points in three-plus seasons.
* Mollot became the 30th player in Maryland history to surpass the 100-point plateau with the seven points against Towson on March 9, 2002.
* Mollot moved into 12th place on the school's all-time career assist list with four helpers vs. Bucknell on March 11, 2003. He currently has 82 career assists and can move into the top 10 with seven more.
* Junior Dan LaMonica is on track to become the 31st Terp with 100-plus points in his career as he comes into action vs. Stony Brook with 96 career points on 44 goals and 52 assists in two-plus seasons.
* Graduate student Brian Hunt piled up 128 points in his three seasons at Yale and ranks 10th all-time in Bulldog history in scoring. He had 78 goals and 50 assists from 1999-2001 with Yale. With the Terps, Hunt has scored eight goals and added three assists in his Maryland debut and now has 139 career points on 86 goals and 53 assists.
McCormick Named ACC Player of the Week & Md. Athlete of Wk.
* Terps' senior goalie Danny McCormick posted a career-high 17 saves in the ACC and season-opening win over Duke and was named ACC Player of the Week and Maryland Player of the Week for his performance. McCormick and the Terps' defense held Duke scoreless for a span of 38 minutes from the early second quarter through the late fourth quarter. McCormick had a span of 50 minutes in which he stopped 16 of 17 Blue Devils shots on goal.
Terps Move Butler Game to Florida; Face Georgetown on Apr. 28
* The Maryland-Butler game originally scheduled for April 28 in College Park will now be played on March 25 at 7 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla., at the St. Andrew's School. Both teams will be in Florida during spring break and will play the game during their time in the Sunshine State. It will be the Terps' second trip to the Sunshine State in three years, as they played the 2001 ACC Championships in Orlando.
* With the movement of the game with Butler, the Maryland-Georgetown game has now been rescheduled for April 28 at Byrd Stadium at 7 p.m.. The Terps and Hoyas were planning to open the 2003 season on Feb. 22, but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions at Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility. It will be the first regular-season game between the teams.
Six Terps Named Preseason All-Americans
* The Maryland men's lacrosse team has placed six players on the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America list. Senior defenseman Michael Howley and junior defender Chris Passavia were both named to the preseason first team. Last season Howley was a USILA second-team All-American and Passavia was a member of the third team.
* Senior midfield/attackman Mike Mollot was named a second team preseason All-American after he was a USILA second teamer last season. Junior attacker Dan LaMonica was also named to the second team. Last season, he was a USILA honorable mention All-American.
* Goalie Danny McCormick was named to the preseason honorable mention list after being a USILA honorable mention All-American last year. Newcomer attackman Brian Hunt, who comes to Maryland as a graduate student after playing at Yale, was also named a preseason honorable mention All-American as he makes his debut as a Terp this spring. Hunt missed all of last year with a broken ankle.
Leading Scorers All Around
* It is believed that the 2003 Maryland men's lacrosse team is in the process of making NCAA sports history as the Terps have a roster unlike any other in the history of college athletics. Maryland has a roster that has four players who led their respective teams in scoring in their last seasons of action. It is still being researched by the NCAA, but it is believed that this is the first instance of its kind in any sport.
* Maryland returns its own leading scorer from 2002 in senior Mike Mollot, who had 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists last season. The Terps have added three new players who join the team from other Division I programs where each of them led their respective teams in scoring in their last year of action.
* Graduate student Brian Hunt topped Yale's scoring chart in 2001 and finished fourth in the nation in points with 58 on 28 goals and 30 assists.
* Joe Parker, who is also a graduate student, played one year of lacrosse at Colgate last season, where he also led the team in points with 48 on 29 goals and 19 assists.
* Finally, junior transfer Justin Smith, who comes to the Terps from UMBC, was the Retrievers' leading scorer last season with 24 points on 18 goals and six assists.
2003 Schedule Notes
* For 2003, Maryland has added several new opponents including Georgetown, Stony Brook, Butler and Notre Dame. The Terps will also continue their long-time rivalries with ACC foes Duke, North Carolina and Virginia along with local battles against Johns Hopkins, Navy, Towson and UMBC.
* "We are very excited about our schedule for the spring of 2003," said Dave Cottle, who enters his second season at the helm of the Terps' program. "We feel we have added some games against top-quality opponents that make it one of the toughest schedules in the nation."
* The Terps will appear on the WMAR Channel 2 Television Game of the Week for a school-record three occasions. Maryland was featured in the first game of the package as they traveled to Towson on March 8 and won 12-8. The greatest rivalry in lacrosse renews once again on WMAR for the sixth year in a row as Johns Hopkins comes to College Park for a Saturday, April 12, prime time match-up. The Terps will also play in a televised prime-time game as they host UMBC on April 25 at 7:30 p.m.
* Maryland was scheduled to open the WMAR broadcast schedule on March 1 against Duke, but the game was unable to be aired due to its rescheduled date and time on March 2.
* The Terps take on seven teams that finished in last season's final USILA/STX Poll (No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 15 Navy and No. 18 Towson). They also play five teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2002: Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Stony Brook and Virginia.
* The games with Georgetown, Stony Brook, Butler and Notre Dame will all be the first regular-season meetings against those teams. The Terps have faced the Hoyas, Bulldogs and Fighting Irish each once before, all in NCAA Tournament games.
* The ACC Tournament will be held in Charlottesville, Va., on April 18 and 20, 2003 at the University of Virginia, the site of the Terps' last ACC title in 1998.
Terps' 78th Season of Lacrosse
* The Terps, now in the fourth season of the new century, have an all-time record of 627-201-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 77 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 9-4. The program's 600th win came against Duke on April 21, 2000, 7-6 in the ACC Semifinals at Byrd Stadium.
* In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage. This decade, the Terps are now 36-12 (.750).
