WASHINGTON D.C. -- The Maryland women's gymnastics team improved to 11-8 with a 196.650-195.475 win over the George Washington Colonials Wednesday night. The overall team score is the second highest mark in school history. Juniors Sarah Hoenig and Rachel Sibert, sophomore Mandy Pascual and freshmen Rachel Martinez, Kristi Skowronski and Alexandria Gatch delivered record- setting routines.

Freshman Martinez placed first in the all-around with a 39.525, a score she posted at a quad meet earlier this year. The mark is the second highest all-around score in school history. The young gymnast set a new career high for herself on the beam, earning a 9.875. Additionally Martinez equaled her 9.9 career highs on the vault and the floor.

Another all-around competitor, freshman Skowronski, had a star-shined night. One of the smallest gymnasts on the team, Skowronski delivered big on the bars (9.9), the beam (9.875) and floor (9.8). All three scores are Skowronski's new career highs.

Sibert, who was sidelined in 2002 with a shoulder injury, has been a key for the Terps on the vault and the bars this season. Against the Colonials, she notched a new career high of 9.850 on the vault. Fellow junior Hoenig set a new career high on the floor (9.850). Hoenig, a 2002 NCAA Regional participant, continued her excellence on the beam, hitting a career best of 9.925.

The top Terp on the bars, sophomore Pascual, hit another school record 9.925. Pascual first earned the mark at the quad meet on Feb. 22 this season. Freshman Gatch recorded a 9.9 on the beam, a personal best in her first year. On the floor Gatch earned a 9.8, a mark she has notched in back-to-back meets.

Maryland emerges from its 2003 battle against GWU with a 2-1 advantage in the season series vs. the Colonials. Next, the Terps will return home to host EAGL opponent, Rutgers this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Comcast Center. In addition to being the last home meet of the 2003 season, the Terps will use the evening to say goodbye to its senior class consisting of co-captain Stacey Celenski and Catherine Gardner. Both gymnasts will be honored on senior night. Admission to the meet is free.
