AIKEN, S.C. -
University of Maryland followed up its opening-round 294 with a spring-best 290 to finish in eighth place at the rain-shortened Palmetto Intercollegiate here Tuesday.
Rain on Monday washed out the second round of the 54-hole tourney. Eighteenth-ranked College of Charleston won the tournament title by five strokes over host USC-Aiken, finishing with a 36-hole total of one-over par 569. South Carolina finished in third place with a 575.
The Terps finished ahead of the only other ACC team in the field, Florida State, which finished in ninth place.
Maryland was led by freshman John Eades, who fired a two-under 69 - the best round of his collegiate career - to finish in a tie for 12th with a one-over 143.
Other Maryland finishers included Tim Kane (73-71-144), Jeff Spradlin (72-74-146), John Moheyer (75-76-151) and Dan MacDonald (76-77-153).
For Eades, it marks the second consecutive spring tournament in which he has led the Terp lineup. In the spring opener, Feb. 29-March 2 at the LSU Spring Invitational, Eades shot rounds of 74-72-75 for a three-round total of five-over 221, good for a tie for 24th place.
Aaron Black of USC-Aiken captured medalist honors with a two-round total of 68-70-138. He edged out Charleston's Bruce McDonald, who carded a 72-67-139.
The Terps, who spent most of the winter working out indoors because of the severe weather experienced in the Mid-Atlantic, now prepare for the William & Mary Invitational, a tournament comprised of mostly District II teams. The tournament will be held March 23-24.
